How do I start a home based catering business?

What licenses and permits do I need to start a home based catering business in New York City? I've googled it and everything but it's hard to find a page that says exactly what I have to do. I'd appreciate advice, especially from anyone who has started a catering business themselves. Thanks!

  1. You need business license, health department certification of your kitchen, etc. Complicated and expensive, but then you will be handling food. Not a good idea for a home-based biz, especially in NYC.
  2. find out the city codes and figure out a menu cost and cost to get what you need to start, have a plan before you jump in.Check out supply and demand for the business.
  3. Your best option is to consult with local catering businesses that have a proven track record. Try traveling to various areas outside of the city, where competition is less fierce and you can set up meetings with the owners. They can tell you what has worked, what has failed, and where the market trends are headed. If you do your homework (get out and talk with others) it will save you time and money in the future. Another suggestion is to find a business plan that larger companies use, and tailor it down to meet your criteria. They offer classes on starting your own business and it is well worth the investment. Don't get logged down with basing your research about working from home as it tends to limit what you determine to be successful. Look at it as though you are opening a new mall in your town, think bigger and you will not only expect more, but get more out of it. Good luck.
